Sunday 22nd January 2006 Black Lion v Wigmore Youth

Game 1: Black Lion 1 – Wigmore Youth 1

Wigmore travelled to table toping Black Lion eager to show their ability against quality opposition and they did not dissapoint. They soaked up the early Black Lion pressure and soon began to create chances as they hit on the break. 10 minutes in Wiggies man of the match Ronan Luckhurst received a through ball from Morgan Ashenden, ran into the box and produced a classy finish to give Wigmore the lead.

Black Lion were frustrated by Wigmore’s tiger like tackling and were allowed very little time on the ball.

Both sides contributed to produce a spectacular second half. Wigmore should of taken a further lead but saw 2 clear attempts blocked on the line by the dogged Lion rear guard.

It was Black Lion’s turn to exert some pressure and they forced a succession of corners. With 5 minutes remaining persistent play down the right wing forced another Black Lion corner that was swung into the striker who finished on the volley to even up the scoreline. Wigmore were given a last minute chance when the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box, but neither the shot or the rebound could find the back of the net.

Game 2: Black Lion 1 – Wigmore Youth 0

Game 2 produced another quality match between 2 very even teams. Highlight of the first half was some unbelievable defending by Wigmore with man of the match Daniel Baird leading by example. Black Lion were unable to create a clear cut chance and were always worried of the breakaway.

The second half was much more open and Wigmore enjoyed the lion share of the ball.

Striker James Perrier ran onto Jack Bryant’s through ball but was unable to round the Black Lion keeper who was very fast of his line.

Wigmore continued to pressurize and saw further goal bound efforts saved.

With the final whistle approaching the draw looked a certainty but Black Lion forced the ball into the Wigmore box and for once they were unable to clear allowing a shot to fire across the goal and into the back of the net. Black Lion came away with the points but both teams deserve credit for producing such a great game.
